Onboarding to Manifold for the Broad Institute

  1. Navigate to broad.sc.manifold.ai.
  2. Sign in with a Broad email address and Broad password. Manifold uses Broad SSO; there is no separate Manifold password.
  3. If login fails, the account may not yet be provisioned, or it may need to be added to the Broad SSO group. Contact support@manifold.ai.

First login

  • New users will not have any Workbenches. This is expected.
  • Select the menu icon (top left) to open the navigation panel and move between Home, Workbenches, and the Data Browser.

Access is determined by roles

Access is determined by a functional role (what a user can do) combined with permissions on specific datasets and Workbenches (what a user can access). Most new Broad users are provisioned with the equivalent of a Data Analyst role: Workbench Creator, Compute User, and Data Downloader.

Funding Source

A funding source is required before a user can run funded work in your Manifold instance.  Compute and storage on Manifold incur costs, and every cost accrued in a Workbench is billed to a funding source. A funding source represents who pays, and your group's administrator can use a funding source for internal bookkeeping.

When a user creates a Workbench, they select a funding source from a dropdown filtered by their access, and that Workbench's compute and storage costs are tagged to it. Costs then appear in Manifold's cost reporting (and in AWS Cost and Usage Reports), broken down by Workbench, user, and funding source.

For Broad

For Broad, funding must be secured before a lab can complete work in Manifold. In general terms, the lab submits the Broad Cloud Billing Account Request so BITS/FinOps can approve the cost object for cloud use (available here). Once it is approved, the Manifold team creates the funding source and grants the lab access. Most labs need nothing beyond this — a separate AWS account or external bucket is required only when connecting external storage.
